We just watched a movie in class called “Generation Jobless”. To be honest, the video was a little bit scary. In these days, kids my age are highly pressured into getting a high grade point average, graduating high school, and attending a good university. I think that this video disproved that that’s a good idea. Why spend 4 years in school, come out with a huge debt, and still remain jobless? Many people choose to be a teacher predominantly because it’s an “easy” job to get into. High pay, summers off, good benefits and how hard could it be teaching a bunch of kids their ABC’s? But what this video is saying is that 67% qualified teachers remain jobless. Does teaching still seem like a good idea?

This video mentioned one thing in particular that really startled me; the people who go through more schooling, and actually pay a larger amount of money for their education, will have a harder time landing a job. This is because they ask for a higher salary from employers, but in the end, they still have no work experience. Employers need to stop focusing so much on the experience, and more on the knowledge. Workers with work experience won’t be around in the future if we don’t give the new workers an opportunity to gain experience. I would think that with all the new technology being developed that worker’s tasks would be changing anyway, so why not hire new, young workers? After all, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

This video also addressed trades, such as an electrician, plumber, technician etc. The thing with trades is that almost all employers want workers with 3 or more years of experience. How can the economy persist is no new workers are being hired? Eventually, all old workers will retire, and we’ll be left with the new workers with no work experience. Employers need to start thinking of new, smarter, more cost-efficient ways of training young workers, before we can no longer find a plumber to come fix our clogged toilet.

This whole “work experience” situation highly relates to my own life. I’ve been trying to get a job for over a year now, and people keep telling me “you’re first job is always your hardest to get”, but if I can never get a first job, how will it ever get easier for me? Employers need to start thinking about the future and not the present as much. If you never offer the first job, then every job you go for will be the hardest to get.
